Guide for Linking a Personal Domain

Learn how to connect a custom domain to your site — either automatically or manually.

Besides the staging subdomain on Webflow (e.g., yoursite.webflow.io), you have the option to launch your site on any custom domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) or subdomain (e.g., subdomain.yourdomain.com) that you own. Utilizing a custom domain or subdomain not only enhances your brand’s visibility but also boosts SEO rankings and simplifies site discovery for users.

Within Site settings in the Publishing tab under Production, Webflow offers various methods for integrating a custom domain, depending on factors like linking an existing domain or acquiring a new one, selecting between the root or www subdomain as the primary domain, and more.

Please Note: Each website you wish to link to a custom domain requires a paid Site plan.

In the following tutorial, discover when to utilize:

  1. Express Link Custom Domain
  2. Express Link Subdomain
  3. Manual Domain Connection
  4. Purchase New Domain

Express Link Custom Domain

If you:

  • Already possess your domain
  • Do not need to designate the root domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) as the main domain
  • Desire an automated, speedy linkage of your domain to your Webflow site without manual DNS configuration
Kindly Note: This method recommends setting the www subdomain (e.g., www.yourdomain.com) as the primary domain. To set the root domain as the primary, manual domain connection is necessary. Refer to SSL hosting to learn more about setting the root domain as the default.

For detailed steps, refer to our tutorial on promptly linking a domain.

Express Link Subdomain

For scenarios where you:

  • Currently own the subdomain
  • Prefer an automatic connection of your subdomain to your Webflow site without manual DNS setup

For more insights, consult our tutorial on rapidly linking a subdomain.

Note: If preferred, manual subdomain connection is also possible.

Manual Domain Connection

Opt for the Manual Domain Connection method to link either a domain or subdomain if:

  • Already possess the domain
  • (If needed) Intend to define the root domain as the primary domain
  • Feel at ease configuring DNS settings manually

For comprehensive instructions, follow our guide for manually linking a personalized domain or subdomain. If relevant, refer to our guide on setting the root domain as the default on SSL hosting as well.

Purchase a New Domain

If:

  • Currently lack a custom domain
  • Want to procure a unique domain
  • Prefer not to select the root domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) as the primary domain
  • Desire to buy and automatically connect your domain to your Webflow site without manual DNS adjustments
Please Note: This method suggests setting the www subdomain (e.g., www.yourdomain.com) as the primary domain. To make the root domain the primary one, external purchase of the domain is required, followed by manual linking. See SSL hosting to learn more about setting the root domain as the default.
