Introduction to interactive content

An explanation of static and dynamic content.

Fixed and lively content represent the two forms of content that can be utilized to construct your website. Fixed content pertains to content that is not linked to the CMS, whereas interactive content alludes to content that is associated with the CMS.

Within this instructional module, you will gain insights on:

  • Fixed content
  • Interactive content

Fixed content

Fixed content characterizes content that necessitates manual updates. You can stylize elements that contain static content using classes, enabling you to customize multiple elements simultaneously, but the management of the static content itself needs to be done manually. Fixed content proves to be beneficial on autonomous pages, such as your 404 error page, site homepage, and password page.

Notwithstanding, fixed content may not be ideal if you intend to establish a blog, design portfolio, or any website exhibiting comparable content types that undergo constant modifications (e.g., a news site). For instance, blogs frequently adhere to a standard format for their blog entries — and it would be unproductive to individually create and design each blog post on your website.

In such scenarios, as well as numerous others, utilizing fixed content would entail duplicating and altering substantial amounts of content manually. Here is where interactive content can prove to be advantageous.

Interactive content

Interactive content embodies content that is interlinked with data in the Webflow CMS — content that is subject to change. By integrating interactive content, your design becomes connected to CMS data, allowing you to update various instances of content collectively.

For example, by utilizing a dynamic Collection template page for a “Blog posts” Collection, you will have the ability to adjust the template page’s design in one location in the Designer — consequently updating the design of every blog post on your website. This approach is exceedingly efficient for websites that feature recurrent content (e.g., blogs, news sites, team member biographies).

Eager to delve deeper into dynamic web pages?

A text element is dynamically linked to the “Name” field in a Collection called “Portfolio items.” The content of the text element is then automatically populated by the content in the “Name” field.
