Choose your website’s language encoding

Set your site’s 2-letter language code.

Selecting your website’s language encoding (also known as an “ISO encoding”) enables you to specify the natural (human) language of your website so that browsers, translation tools, and accessibility tools like screen readers can utilize this information for language-specific operations. These operations encompass applying appropriate typefaces, identifying accents in text-to-speech tools, conducting spell checks, translating web pages, and more.

Within this tutorial, you will understand:

  1. How to indicate your website’s language encoding
  2. How to define language encodings for region-specific websites

Indicating your website’s language encoding

You have the liberty to utilize any approved 2-character language encoding with Webflow.

Follow these steps to specify your website’s 2-character language encoding:

  1. Visit Site settings > General tab > Localization
  2. Enter your 2-character code under Language encoding
  3. Press Save modifications
  4. Deploy your website

Note: The language encoding section in Site settings supersedes any region-specific language encodings. In case you have activated multiple regions on your website, ensure that the language encoding section in Site settings remains blank.

Defining language encodings for region-specific websites

Webflow Localization automatically configures your website’s language encoding based on each region. If you have activated Localization on your website and previously specified a site language encoding, you must eliminate the language encoding from Site settings:

  1. Head to Site settings > General tab > Localization
  2. Remove the language encoding from Language encoding
  3. Click Save modifications
  4. Deploy your website
