Webflow does not offer domain registration services (i.e., it does not sell domains), hence, it is not feasible to shift your domain to Webflow. Nonetheless, you can link any domain you possess to a Webflow site by directing that domain to the servers of Webflow using our DNS records. By aligning your domain with Webflow, you retain your domain with your current registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Google, etc.) while connecting it to your Webflow site.
Prepare your domain for connection with Webflow
For connecting a domain that was previously managed on another platform, kindly adhere to the steps below to refresh your DNS configurations before associating your domain with Webflow. This serves to diminish and potentially eliminate any difficulties or discrepancies that might necessitate DNS setting alterations in the future.
In case your domain registrar grants access to manage DNS records
Should you have the authorization to handle the DNS configurations of your domain, ensure to complete the following prior to linking your domain with Webflow:
- Capture a screenshot of your previous records as a precaution.
- Configure the nameservers of your domain to utilize the default nameservers of your registrar or DNS host if they are currently customized. For aid, get in touch with the customer support at your registrar, or consult their help guides on nameservers.
- Erase all A records on the primary domain (host @ or yourdomain.com)
- Erase all CNAME records on the complete domain (host www or www. Or www.yourdomain.com)
- Erase all CNAME records on any subdomain designated for Webflow (e.g., Host blog or blog. Or blog.yourdomain.com)
Simply swap yourdomain.com in the models with the true name of your domain.
You are now ready to link your domain with Webflow and pair it with a Webflow site.
In case your domain registrar does not permit management of DNS records
Certain domain registrars do not furnish DNS hosting solutions — they do not offer the option to set up DNS records. The sole option provided is to configure custom nameservers — also referred to as name servers or NS records.
Given that Webflow hosting doesn’t necessitate custom nameservers, and if your domain provider does not authorize DNS record creation, you can either:
- Migrate your domain to a new registrar that offers DNS hosting
- Position your domain’s nameservers to a different registrar providing DNS hosting
Subsequently, from the control panel of this alternate DNS host, you can synchronize your domain with Webflow.
In the case you require further guidance on either path, refer to the documentations of your current registrar and the registrar where you wish to shift or link your domain to. Feel free to reach out to their support for any assistance.
Adjusting DNS configurations
Each DNS host holds their unique procedure for modifying DNS settings and sadly, their control panel interfaces are typically not very user-friendly. We recommend that you peruse the help guides of your DNS host, and do not hesitate to contact their support for guidance on their interface and configurations.
